The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia on WRTI: The Sounds of America! March 19th at 5 PM

Violinist Michael Ludwig

Join us on Sunday from 5 to 6 pm to hear the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia’s ground-breaking, all-American program, recorded in concert last month. Dirk Brossé conducts Sounds of America, and features works by Daron Hagen, Austin Wintory, and Walter Piston.

Violinist Michael Ludwig is soloist for the concert broadcast, performing Hagen’s Songbook: Concerto for Violin, String Orchestra, Harp and Percussion. Songbook is a four-movement violin concerto, written in 2011 jointly for violinist Michael Ludwig and conductor JoAnn Falletta of the Buffalo Philharmonic. To construct the concerto, Hagen chose four folk tunes that had a special meaning for him—they are all songs his wife sings to their young son at bedtime.

The program also includes an unusual work by American composer Austin Wintory. Apotheosis is the last section from his award-winning soundtrack from Journey—a video game!

The concluding work on the program is by award-winning American composer Walter Piston. His Sinfonietta was premiered by the Boston Symphony in March of 1941 under the baton of harpist and conductor Bernard Zighera, for whom it was composed.

Applause! is our monthly broadcast of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. Dirk Brossé is music director. Jack Moore is your host. Listen on Sunday, March 19th from 5 to 6 pm on WRTI.
