Be sure to join us Sunday, January 10th at 1 pm for our weekly Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert broadcast! Guest conductor Marin Alsop and pianist Jon Kimura Parker join the Philadelphians for George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. This is the original jazz band version, Ferde Grofe’s faithful orchestration of Paul Whiteman’s arrangement.
This is the original jazz band version of Rhapsody in Blue.
Also on the program is another seldom-heard transcription, of Claude Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, for eleven instruments. Benno Sachs orchestrated this for the Society for Private Musical Performances in Vienna, under the auspices of Arnold Schoenberg.
Sunday’s broadcast is of a concert from the end of last October at Verizon Hall, and concludes with Dmitri Shostakovich’s powerfully moving Symphony No. 5.
During intermission, Susan Lewis speaks with the versatile and engaging Jon Kimura Parker, and Bliss Mickelson spends a few minutes talking to conductor Marin Alsop.
