Jazz Album of the Week: Louise Baranger Plays The Great American Groove Book

March 26, 2018. With an extensive resume spanning from Hollywood to Broadway and covering the depths of jazz, it’s no wonder trumpeter Louise Baranger could lead a band that nails tunes from the ‘60s and ‘70s. She does just that on the album Louise Baranger Plays The Great American Groove Book.

A native of Hollywood, Baranger has numerous television credits, as well as classical and jazz experience. Her first jazz gig was with the Harry James Orchestra. After that, she went on to perform and record with Nelson Riddle, Jack Wilson, and Bobby Shew, among others.

On this album, Louise and her band play pop favorites like “Love Potion No. 9” and “Never Can Say Goodbye,” along with jazz hits like Lee Morgan’s “The Sidewinder.” The silver screen is represented in “Soul Bossa Nova,” a Quincy Jones composition appearing in the 1964 film The Pawnbroker, and later known as the main theme for the Austin Powers series.

Baranger enlisted fellow trumpeter Tim Ouimette to handle the arrangements of these grooves, making this a wonderful album of jazz interpretations of familiar and fun tunes. From start to finish, Louise Baranger Plays The Great American Groove Book is worthy listening for jazz heads and oldies fans alike.
