For the first time in over 13 years, we're bringing you a LIVE remote broadcast of The Philadelphia Orchestra on WRTI, featuring Yannick Nezet-Seguin leading the Philadelphians in works by Schumann, Janacek, and Dvorak and highlighted by violinist Gil Shaham performing the famous Violin Concerto of Brahms. Hosted by Gregg Whiteside, live from the Kimmel Center on Friday, May 24th at 2 pm, with intermission interviews by Susan Lewis and Jim Cotter.
This is the second-to-last concert of the Philadelphia Orchestra's 113th subscription season before the ensemble travels to China. The performance is dedicated to the late Wolfgang Sawallisch, and opens with the deeply moving Adagio espressivo from Robert Schumann’s Second Symphony. Maestro Sawallisch was particularly devoted to Schumann’s music and together with the Philadelphians recorded all four of his symphonies, along with other works.
The tribute concert will continue, as Central Europe comes alive in Janácek's Sinfonietta, a festive work with a stunning opening brass fanfare that includes 12 trumpets. And, a folk ethos likewise infuses the music of Dvorák, three of whose Slavonic Dances we’ll hear to conclude the program: No. 1, Op.46, No. 2, Op 72, and No. 8, Op 46. Dvorak credited Brahms with the success of his career, as the elder composer encouraged him greatly.
And a highlight will be the famous Violin Concerto of Brahms, to be performed right after intermission by the incomparable Gil Shaham. Gregg Whiteside is the host.
