The Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert on WRTI: Tchaikovsky's "Pathetique" on Feb. 28, 1 PM

Georgia Bertazzi
Violinist Christian Tetzlaff is soloist in this concert broadcast from January, 2016

This Sunday's Philadelphia Orchestra broadcast is an all-Russian program that brings to the podium Grammy and ECHO Klassik Award-winning Italian conductor Fabio Luisi, who serves as general music director of the Zurich Opera and principal conductor of the Metropolitan Opera, where he was expected to succeed James Levine as Music Director there. But with the announcement of his new appointment as principal conductor of the Danish National Symphony in the 2017-18 season, he has effectively stepped down at the Met.

Mr. Luisi made his second Philadelphia Orchestra appearance at Verizon Hall in January; the concert will be broadcast on WRTI’s Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert broadcast this Sunday, February 28th at 1 pm.

Conductor Fabio Luisi

The all-Russian program features two of Tchaikovsky’s most important works: his Violin Concerto in D, and his Symphony No. 6, the "Pathétique," a work about which Tchaikovsky remarked, “I love it as I have never loved any of my other musical offspring.”

The acclaimed German violinist Christian Tetzlaff will be the soloist in the Violin Concerto. The concert begins with the colorful and popular overture from Mikhail Glinka’s opera, Ruslan and Lyudmila. During intermission, WRTI’s Bliss Mickelson speaks with Mr. Tetzlaff, and Susan Lewis sits down backstage with Maestro Luisi.

That’s this Sunday, February 28th, from 1 to 3 pm on WRTI.
