Thank You, Philadelphia, All Weekend Long on WRTI!

This Saturday and Sunday, November 19th and 20th, is a Philadelphia weekend like no other on WRTI. Before Thanksgiving is upon us, we’re giving thanks for some of the great Philadelphia ensembles, instrumentalists, singers, and composers all weekend long!
Saturday morning from 6 to noon, Debra Lew Harder will play all music connected to Philadelphia either by performer or composer. Then at 1 pm it’s Opera Philadelphia’s Yardbird, the New York premiere recorded at the Apollo Theater from earlier this year. With Lawrence Brownlee as saxophonist Charlie Parker, this was the very first opera presented on the Apollo stage. Stay tuned after the opera when Mark Pinto unveils an all-Philly Classical New Releases!

From 6 to 9 pm, jazz jumps into the party, as Jeff Duperon starts off the evening with all-Philadelphia bands, musicians, and composers.

Over on the HD2 side at 9 pm on Saturday, Kile Smith presents an all-Philly Now Is the Time: an hour of music for the flute with composers and performers from in and around our city.

Sunday the 20th is the exciting opening of The Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert season on WRTI, at 1 pm. Hosted by Gregg Whiteside, the concert features Yuja Wang with Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto, and the Berlioz Symphony fantastique. Yannick Nézet-Séguin begins his fifth Philadelphia season with this concert!

At 3 pm it’s more Philadelphia Orchestra, this time, from Carnegie Hall! Yannick conducts Beethoven, HK Gruber, and Johann Strauss, Jr. in a program featuring 20-year-old Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki.

Would that be enough? No, it would not. At 5 pm it’s the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, with Ricardo Morales (The Philadelphia Orchestra’s principal clarinet) performing the Mozart Clarinet Concerto, and from Taiwan’s most-performed composer, Yiu-kwong Chung’s piano concerto Red Cliff.

Thank you, Philadelphia, this weekend on WRTI!
