Watch and Listen: Regional Winners of Steinway Junior Piano Competition Perform Live on WRTI

Youthful exuberance filled the WRTI performance studio when three young Steinway Junior Piano Competition winners performed.  Host Kevin Gordon welcomed pianists Michelle Wang, Anwen Deng, and Elizabeth Yang, in the third of our special live concert broadcasts with the winners of this inaugural Steinway competition.

Pianist Michelle Wang

Ten-year-old Michelle Wang recently won 1st place in the Gertrude S. Brown Concerto competition. Michelle won Grand Prize in 2017 Carmel Klavier International Piano Competition, 1st Prize in Miriam Shields Gottlieb and Miriam Thomann Piano Competition, 2nd place in Steinway & Sons Washington Piano Competition and performed at the Polish Embassy. Michelle will play the Nocturne in B Major, Opus 32 No.1 by Frederic Chopin.

Pianist Anwen Deng

Nine-year-old Anwen Deng, born in Australia, began playing piano at the age of three, was accepted at the Juilliard pre-college division at six where she also studies composition, and has already won several competitions, including the 26th Chopin International Piano Competition for Children and Youth in Poland. the Grand Prize in the 9th Chopin International Piano Competition Hartford, and the first prize in 2018 Steinway & Sons Piano Competition. Anwen will play Chopin’s Fantasie Impromptu.

Fourteen-year-old Elizabeth Yang has been playing piano for ten years and has won first place at the New Jersey Music Teachers Association Young Musician Competition for seven years, Alternate in the MTNA New Jersey Junior Division Piano Competition, and Grand Prize for the National League of Performing Arts Virtuosi Competition. Elizabeth also plays the oboe will be a freshman at Montgomery High School this fall. Elizabeth will perform the Partita No. 2 in C Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach.

 

A veteran broadcaster, Kevin garnered a wealth of experience in radio before taking the weekday classical host position from 2 to 6 PM at WRTI, where he was on the air until his retirement in March 2023.
