Now is the Time
Contemporary American Music with Host Kile Smith
WRTI HD-2 and the All-Classical Stream
Sunday, November 7
10 to 11 pm

The first broadcast of Kile Smith's popular Sunday night show was on June 1st, 2008. Since then, folks near and far have been tuning in - and listening online - to hear all types of contemporary American music. Sunday, November 7th marks a milestone for the show...program #100!

Kile looks back at his state of mind as he assembled the first broadcast - so, the first piece is Steven Burke's Nervosa. Then, two works from Show #2, with one of Kile's favorite composers from his parents' record collection, Dave Brubeck. We'll hear his "Strange Meadow Lark" and "It's a Raggy Waltz," arranged for string quartet!

Philip Koplow's Variations on a Hymn Tune is next (the tune is "Amazing Grace"), followed by Patrick Beckman's celebratory Stomp, for solo piano. Denman Maroney's cabaret-like song "I'm Yours" is followed by something Kile has never done on any of these programs: the composer plays his own music! Kile's American Spirituals, Book 1, written for Philadelphia Orchestra Concertmaster David Kim is next. And finally, Eric Whitacre's setting of the e.e. cummings poem, i thank you God for most this amazing day rounds out the hour.

As Kile says on every show, thanks for listening along to just a little bit of contemporary American music!
