WRTI remembers Sir Neville Marriner with an entire Saturday morning of his recordings, October 15th, 6 am to noon. The prolific and revered conductor passed away October 2nd in London at age 92.
Sir Neville founded the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields in 1958, and made over 600 recordings with the English ensemble. Their supple and precise sound won acclaim from around the world. He also guest-conducted many major orchestras, but the 1985 soundtrack for the film AMADEUS catapulted him and his orchestra to a level of fame beyond audiences of classical music.
Join WRTI’s Debra Lew Harder all Saturday morning as she plays all Marriner, a varied program of recordings with “the Academy” and other orchestras. She will also share brief excerpts of an interview that WRTI’s Jill Pasternak had eight years ago with Sir Neville, a talk filled with humor, insight, and self-deprecation (Marriner, a violinist, said he had wanted to be Jascha Heifetz, but discovered that “the position was already filled”).
