Airmen of Note

Join WRTI on the 4th of July as the Airmen of Note create musical fireworks! The premier jazz ensemble of the United States Air Force hosts annual radio events that allow listeners from far and wide to experience their brand of Americana, delivered with the help of famous jazz guest artists.

This July 4th, we're bringing back (by popular demand) some listener favorites from years past.

At 6 PM, the Airmen of Note will feature Temple University's own Terell Stafford. The master trumpeter is the Director of Jazz Studies and Chair of Instrumental Studies in Temple's Boyer College of Music and Dance. Terell was a guest artist with the band in 2017, and joined them in presenting beautiful standards from the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Victor Lewis, and others.

At 7 PM, vocalist Karrin Allyson will be the featured artist. Taken from the 2008 radio concert, Karrin's unique vocal stylings add a certain flair to some familiar, but not-so-standard standards. From Miles Davis' "Blue In Green" to Jon Hendricks' "Everybody's Boppin'," Karrin and the Airmen will provide the perfect musical compliment to your  burgers and dogs.

At 8 PM, if your party isn't in full force yet, this encore concert will be the catalyst for a great time! This hour-long compilation features excerpts from some of the top musical guests. The Best of the Jazz Heritage Series spotlights fan favorites like Doc Severinson, Roberta Gambarini, Phil Woods and plenty of others.

Join us as we celebrate America's birthday with a party that spotlights the most versatile musicians our country has to offer.

Stationed in Washington, D.C., the Airmen of Note is one of six musical ensembles that comprose the U.S. Air Force Band. Created in 1950 to continue the tradition of Glenn Miller's Army Air Force dance band, the current band consists of 18 active duty Airmen musicians including one vocalist.

Through the years, the Airmen of Note has presented its own brand of big band jazz as well as more contemporary forms of jazz to audiences via annual tours accross the United States, deployments around the world and local performances throughout metropolitan Washington, D.C.
