Jazz Album of the Week: The Best of the Jazz Heritage Series with The Airmen of Note and More

July 1, 2019. The U.S. Air Force Band's compilation album The Best of the Jazz Heritage Series, Volume I features steallar guest artists including Walt Weiskopf, Doc Severinsen, and Al Jarreau.

For over a decade, the Airmen of Note (the premier jazz ensemble for the United States Air Force) has recorded and released annual radio specials featuring the top names in jazz, as the Jazz Heritage Series. You’ve heard these specials here on WRTI!

Back in 1990, the Jazz Heritage Series began as concerts that could only be enjoyed by live audiences in Washington D.C. The radio broadcasts that started in 2007 allow listeners across the country to experience these amazing collaborations, and the guest artists are always crowd-pleasers.

The Best of the Jazz Heritage Series, Volume I highlights some of the brightest moments from these performances. There are local connections as well, with organist Joey DeFrancesco and guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel featured as Series’ alumni.

This year, WRTI 90.1's Jazz Heritage Series broadcast will hit the airwaves July 4th from 6 to 9 PM. The guest artists include trumepeter Terell Stafford and vocalist Karrin Allyson. Stand by!
