Maureen Malloy Recommends…The Cookers: Believe

The Cookers: Believe

When it comes to music, you can easily get burned by judging a book by its cover.  In the case of The Cookers' Believe album, it is safe to follow your gut - the cover says it all as it lists the amazing artists that make up this fantastic group: Billy Harper, Eddie Henderson, David Weiss, Craig Handy, George Cables, Cecil McBee and Billy Hart.

The band's trumpeter, David Weiss, put The Cookers together back in 2007 as a tribute to the Freddie Hubbard recording "Night of the Cookers," and they continued to perform and record together, growing stronger and tighter as time went on.  On Believe,  you'll hear different originals that really spotlight the versatility of this seasoned group of musicians.

The only non-original is a "long, but worth-it" rendition of Wayne Shorter’s "Free For All."  If played by a more novice band, that title could be scary; but these veterans knock it right out of the park.  The best part about listening to a record full of seasoned professionals is that solos are neither a fight nor a stretch.  Each member gets his due.
