Schumann's Manfred Overture, inspired by Lord Byron's poem Manfred in the late 1840s, opens the program, a work that Schumann himself called a "dramatic poem with music." The design of this overture may be conventional, but the inner workings are as passionate and daring as Byron's poem.

Also on the program, Mozart's 27th, and last, piano concerto, played by Curtis graduate (and now faculty member) pianist Jonathan Biss, who brings a special touch to Mozart’s music.
