The Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert on WRTI: Yannick Conducts Daphnis and Chloé, Aug. 13 and 14

Violinist Benjamin Beilman

On Sunday, August 13th at 1 pm, WRTI's Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert re-broadcast brings us a feast of Ravel, and Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 1, played by the brilliant Curtis grad and rising star Benjamin Beilman! Listen on WRTI's new App!Yannick Nézet-Séguin is on the podium to conduct two masterworks by Ravel. We'll hear Ravel's intimate Le Tombeau de Couperin, dedicated to a friend who died in the First World War, and also a tribute to the splendors of French music.

And speaking of the splendors of French music, what better example than Ravel’s ballet Daphnis and Chloé!  Yannick conducts the complete version of this sensual orchestral and choral showpiece, joined by the Westminster Symphonic Choir, and bringing to vivid life the mythological, hedonistic tale, with its musical bacchanal in the garden of Pan! It's a work Yannick calls “very dear to my heart.”

During intermission, WRTI's Debra Lew Harder and Susan Lewis will take us backstage for conversations with Benjamin Beilman, and with Philadelphia Orchestra Principal Flute Jeffrey Khaner, who plays the flute solos in Daphnis and Chloé.

Not to be missed, that's Sunday, August 13th at 1  pm on WRTI 90.1 and on the classical stream on Monday, August 14th at 7 pm.
