Pianist Yefim Bronfman

Vladimir Jurowski, one of the most sought-after conductors in the world, collaborates with one of the world’s most talented virtuoso pianists, Yefim Bronfman, in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, the “Emperor,” one of the supreme achievements in the genre — this Sunday, September 18th at 1 pm on The Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert re-broadcast on WRTI.

Conductor Vladimir Jurowski

The always incisive Jurowski, a frequent guest with The Philadelphians, also conducts the orchestra in works by Nikolai Miaskovsky, and Leos Janacek.

Maestro Jurowski’s grandfather, the Soviet film music composer Vladimir Michailovich Jurowski, studied with Miaskovsky, whose 10th Symphony was given its U.S. premiere in 1930 by The Philadelphia Orchestra and Leopold Stokowski. We’ll hear this short, powerful work on Sunday’s broadcast.

The concert concludes with Leos Janá?ek’s Taras Bulba, completed in 1918, the three divisions of Janá?ek’s score reflecting the three major events of the Cossack Taras Bulba’s life, which are depicted in programmatic fashion: the death of his son Andrei, the death of his son Ostap by execution, and finally, Taras’s own painful death.
