Andres Segovia popularized the classical guitar. Julian Bream took it to the next level.

The virtuoso guitarist Julian Bream, who died August 14, 2020 at age 87 of natural causes in Wiltshire, England, helped change the way the world views the classical guitar and the lute, taking the instruments to new audiences and musical settings.

Join us on Friday, July 26th at 12:10 PM when local guitarist Brad Rau visits the performance studio to play music from Bach to Paul Desmond. WRTI's Susan Lewis is host. 

Acclaimed as "an artist of the first order, taking his place beside the great performers" by Jamsphere Music Magazine, guitarist Brad Rau performs extensively around the Philadelphia region, and has developed a distinctive teaching style combining music, physics, philosophy and humor. On Friday, April 5th, he visited the Performance Studio to play a variety of works and chat with WRTI's Susan Lewis.

Praised by Performance Today as "one of the top young guitarists of his generation," Jordan Dodson makes his March, 2019 debut with the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia in a program featuring Glow, Andrea Clearfield's new concerto for electric guitar. Soloist and composer visit WRTI for live music and conversation with host, Susan Lewis.

Joaquin Rodrigo wrote Concierto Andaluz in 1967 for the Romero Quartet, an ensemble that's known as the "The Royal Family of the Guitar." WRTI's Susan Lewis spoke with the Grammy-winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, whose members were mentored by the Romeros. The LAGQ continues to champion Concierto Andaluz while also expanding the repertoire for classical guitar. 

Classical guitarist Michael Poll has been engaged in a labor of love with J.S. Bach’s music for over two years. His new album 7-String Bach is the culmination of his “Bach Project,” launched through a highly successful Kickstarter campaign.
