Django Reinhardt

November 19, 2018. The Hot Club of San Francisco was created 30 years ago because guitarist Paul “Pazzo” Mehling wanted to spread the music and history of Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli and their Hot Club de France. Over a dozen albums later, the group is commemorating their musical journey with 30 Years, a compilation of favorites from their previous albums.

Gypsy Jazz founders Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli were both born this month in the first decade of the 20th century. Rooted in African-American communities of the South, jazz became popular in Europe in the 1920s and '30s and influenced the development of other styles. WRTI's Susan Lewis has more on "Gypsy jazz."

More than seven decades after the innovations of the Quintette du Hot Club de France, featuring guitar virtuoso Django Reinhardt, combos called Hot Clubs carry on the gypsy jazz sound around the globe in Tokyo, San Francisco, Seattle, Sweden, Norway, Austria, and many other locales. Led by fast-fingered Reinhardt disciple Evan Perri, the Hot Club of Detroit offers a fresh take on the tradition.
