January 11, 2021. Sunset in the Blue, vocalist Melody Gardot’s new album, works on the listener in a deliberate, almost methodical way, as though it knows it’s playing a long con. So if you find yourself preoccupied or not fully present at first listen— if you haven’t yet had your daily yoga, or engaged your mindfulness app, or done whatever it is one must do in early 2021 to attain clarity and presence, don’t despair. Gardot’s fifth full-length, studio album, and first in five years, will work on you anyway.

Whether singing jazz in a nuanced, mellow tone, tackling soul with sultry zeal, or hosting gospel’s tender spirituality with holy heft—there are no walls for Philly vocalist Lee Mo. Only open doors and easy gradations.

The celebrated dynamic duo of Cuban-born pianist Axel Tosca and his vocalist mother, Xiomara Laugart, known as the "Voice of Cuba," visit with J. Michael Harrison in the WRTI Performance Studio on Friday, October 18th at 4 PM in advance of their highly anticipated return to @Exuberance.

October 14, 2019. Jazz vocalist Sara Gazarek had made five critically acclaimed albums, mostly straight-ahead, light and breezy repertoire that left everyone feeling good. Everyone except Gazarek. The vocalist and composer in her mid 30s was navigating some darker moments, and performing the old stuff didn’t feel authentic anymore.

September 30, 2019. Confessions may be her debut album for Mack Avenue Records, but vocalist Veronica Swift, who is 25 years old, has been doing this jazz thing for a while. Swift had a relatively normal childhood for someone who recorded her first album with saxophonist Richie Cole at age nine and made her first appearance at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at 11.

July 29, 2019. An album of vocal duets isn't the most common thing in jazz, and perhaps with good reason. The jazz sensibility tends to eschew the gimmicky, the overly sweet, the un-ironically corny. But the new collaboration between pianist—now, also, vocalist—Kevin Hays and vocalist Chiara Izzi, Across the Sea, may well prove among the exceptions.

July 8, 2019. When trombonist, vocalist, and bandleader Pete McGuinness was growing up in West Hartford, Connecticut, he wanted to be Duke Ellington. So it’s probably no coincidence that with the release of his third big band album, Along for the Ride, McGuinness shows a musical sensibility that mirrors the Duke’s.

June 24, 2019. Legendary for his gifts of vocal improvisation—and for putting lyrics to Oliver Nelson’s “Stolen Moments” and Freddie Hubbard’s “Red Clay”—the late vocalist Mark Murphy, who died in 2015, had a profound impact on the kind of jazz singer Nancy Kelly has become.
