Classical Album of the Week: Feel The Joy In Mi Alma Mexicana / My Mexican Soul

October 7, 2019. As we near the end of National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 to October 15), WRTI rolls out an array of orchestral showstoppers from Mexico’s finest composers.

Our Classical Album of the Week, Mi Alma Mexicana / My Mexican Soul, features the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas, led by maestra Alondra de la Parra. A foot-stomping, leap-out-of-your-seat week of listening is ahead!

Parra curated this album over two years, putting the most famous of works (Jose Pablo Moncayo’s Huapango and Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No. 2—both heard often on WRTI) alongside names and pieces that may be new to many listeners, such as Carlos Chávez’s El trópico and Juventino Rosas’ Sobre las olas.

Mi Alma Mexicana is as much a landmark recording of the Mexican classical canon as it is a love letter from Parra to her home country.

Join us this week as we explore this joy of an album—don't miss a chance to catch Manuel Ponce's guitar concerto, commissioned and praised by the beloved guitarist Andrés Segovia, and Sensemayá by Silvestre Reveultas, inspired by an Afro-Carribean chant.
