This year’s global host city for International Jazz Day is Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates, and home to Etihad Arena — where an All-Star Global Concert will take place on April 30, featuring 19 artists representing 11 countries. The live webcast begins at 4 p.m. EDT, and you can watch it here at wrti.org.
Pianist Herbie Hancock, chairman of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue, will preside over the festivities, while Academy Award-winning actor Jeremy Irons will serve as host. Pianist John Beasley is Music Director for the concert, which will feature dozens of other artists from around the world, including singer Dee Dee Bridgewater, trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, bassist Linda May Han Oh, pianist A Bu, guitarist John McLaughlin, and oudist Naseer Shamma.
Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO’s Director General, says that International Jazz Day’s celebration in Abu Dhabi “will highlight the city’s rich tapestry of creativity and cultural heritage while showcasing jazz’s ability to connect communities and promote dialogue and peace across continents.”
