Vox Phila Presents: God Has Work For Us To Do - A Tribute to Black History Month
Vox Philia and Berks Sinfonietta come together for a musical tribute to Black History Month. They are joined by two regional collegiate choirs: the Albright Chamber Ensemble and the Lincoln University Concert Choir.
Audiences will hear an exciting evening of orchestral and choral music by black and African American composers, including Florence Price, Ysaye M. Barnwell, William Grant Still, Josephine Poelinitz, and many others.
Many selections highlight the black experience in America. The Albright Chamber Ensemble will perform Spiritual Quodlibets by Dr. Ysaye M. Barnwell. “Barnwell includes five quodlibets, a form of music with melodies in counterpoint, using the melodies of several spirituals,” stated Dr. Derrick Thompson, conductor. “We intend to take the audience on a musical journey of the spirituals that brought many African Americans through rough times.”
Together, the ensembles also explore traditions that originated from the musical contributions of African Americans. “The Lincoln University Concert Choir will be presenting a piece that has quickly become a favorite, I Sing Because I’m Happy,” said Victoria Pitre, conductor. “Composer Rollo Dilworth is renowned for his contributions to the Gospel literature. Audience members will note his signature jazz piano accompaniment that adds richness to the harmony of the vocalists.”
