Meet the women who were heard not seen. Baroque Venice’s orphanages provided extensive musical training for the girls that ended up in them. Many stayed all their lives and became the most celebrated virtuosic musicians in Europe. The women performed behind lattice screens, inviting an air of mystery that made their performances even more intriguing to the public.

Their performances generated income to support their institutions, a remarkable departure from the male-dominated world of professional music elsewhere.
