This concert, belatedly celebrating the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth (1770), will feature two of his sublime masterpieces. The hugely popular Fifth Symphony, with its iconic four-note opening motif, is widely considered one of the pinnacles of Western music. The Missa solemnis, Beethoven's monumental Mass setting (written during the same period as his Ninth Symphony and premiered at the same concert) was considered by the composer to be his greatest work, the consummation of all his technique. Also appearing in this program will be the spirited Rondo from Beethoven's only violin concerto.
The concert will be held in the Perelman Theater of the Kimmel Cultural Campus.
Running time is 2 hours 30 minutes with one intermission.
