Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown
Something special occurs when talented people collaborate. That is what happened when Sarah Vaughan and trumpet star Clifford Brown and his band got together to record at the Fine Sound Studios in New York in December of 1954.
They created a legendary LP that ranks with some of the best jazz recordings ever produced because of the personnel involved, and the songs selected. If you're somewhat "old school" and there's still a place in your heart for songs the caliber of "April in Paris," "Embraceable You," "I'm Glad there is You," and "September Song," along with several other standards...and you don't have this CD in your collection, you've been remiss.
The album was produced almost two years prior to the death of Clifford Brown. Other budding jazz luminaries on this disc include flutist Herbie Mann, drummer Roy Haynes, saxophonist Paul Quinichette, pianist Jimmy Jones, and bassist Joe Benjamin.
The storied singer and her musical cohorts are gone now - save for Roy Haynes. But Haynes and the few others on the date, just as the songs they recorded more than half-a-century ago, are immortal.--BP
