Highlights: The 2012 Newport Jazz Festival In Photos
Before noon Saturday, the quartet led by charismatic conguero Pedrito Martinez had its audience gyrating to Afro-Cuban rhythms. Bassist Alfaro Benavides provides additional encouragement from the stage.
The tents have been collapsed, the fog has rolled in and the 2012 Newport Jazz Festival has come and gone — but not before photographer Erik Jacobs captured these brilliant images for us.
This year's edition found the festival cultivating a core of performers, including repeat visitors Rudresh Mahanthappa, Anat Cohen, Miguel Zenón, Jason Moran, Lionel Loueke, Gretchen Parlato, Ambrose Akinmusire, Darcy James Argue and John Hollenbeck. Of course, it also honored fan favorites with high-profile gigs (Dianne Reeves, Pat Metheny, Tedeschi Trucks Band), living giants with multiple bookings (Jack DeJohnette, Bill Frisell) and departed legends with special programming (Ryan Truesdell's Gil Evans Centennial Project, among other tributes). And it continues to search for unique new visions, like those of Cuban percussionists Pedrito Martinez and Dafnis Prieto or saxophonist John Ellis.
