The Sensational Serafin String Quartet

SerafinSQ600px.jpg
Serafin String Quartet includes Esme Allen-Creighton, Lawrence Stomberg, Lisa Vaupel, and Kate Ransom.

This week on Crossover it's a re-broadcast from 2013. Our guests are the musicians of the Serafin String Quartet. Renown worldwide for their excellent music making and lively, infectious performances, the quartet is in residence at the University of Delaware's College of Arts and Sciences.

The Serafin String Quartet's 2013 Naxos release features world-premiere recordings of early chamber works by Pulitzer-winning composer Jennifer Higdon. The quartet's debut recording from 2010 includes works by American composers and composers influenced by American sounds, including Barber, Dvorák, Gershwin, and William Grant Still.

Serafin String Quartet takes its name from master violin maker, Sanctus Serafin, who in 1728 crafted the violin currently played by Kate Ransom. The other members play Testore instruments from the same era, thanks to generous support from Dr. William Stegeman.

On the program, you'll hear excerpts from the aforementioned Naxos CD of Jennifer Higdon's early chamber works, plus music of Dmitri Shostakovich and William Grant Still.

Crossover with Jill Pasternak, Saturday morning at 11:30 am on WRTI-FM, with an encore the following Friday evening at 7 pm on HD-2 and the All-Classical web stream at wrti.org.
