Glimmerglass Opera on WRTI: Bernstein's Operetta CANDIDE, Nov. 21, 1 PM

1956 album cover for 'Candide' with the original Broadway cast

Does everything happen for the best? Not according to Voltaire’s satirical novella, which offers a dizzying display of human depravity, with a couple of natural disasters thrown in for good measure. Funny, fast-moving and philosophical, Candide includes such classic tunes as “The Best of All Possible Worlds,” “Glitter and Be Gay” and “Make Our Garden Grow.”

The brilliant overture from Candide often appears on orchestral programs, and was also well known for years as the theme to The Dick Cavett Show. Bernstein revised the operetta a number of times after its 1956 premiere, making different versions for different venues. Opera houses, Broadway theaters, and universities have all kept Candide alive as an enduring example of Bernstein’s ability to move and entertain us. Listen to Leonard Bernstein's CANDIDE performed by Glimmerglass Opera on WRTI, November 21, 1 to 4:30 pm. Joseph Colaneri conducts. Libretto by Hugh Wheeler.
