Eyes on the Prize, with Joshua Redman

Ways To Subscribe

On his fine new Blue Note album, Words Fall Short, saxophonist Joshua Redman introduces a band full of up-and-comers, including Philly’s own Nazir Ebo. This dynamic young cohort reminded us of an illuminating conversation The Late Set had with Redman in the fall of 2023. We’re sharing that episode again now, in case you missed it the first time around, or simply seek a refresher on the subject of competition. “I’m not saying competition has no place in the music,” Redman explains. “I can say it’s not a spirit with which I approach music. Camaraderie, yes. But even more so, collaboration — and conversation.” Hear, hear.

Greg Bryant has been a longtime curator of improvisational music as a broadcaster, writer, host and musician. As a young child, he began absorbing the artistry of Miles Davis, Les McCann, Jimmy Smith, James Brown, Ornette Coleman, Weather Report, and Jimi Hendrix via his parent's record collection. He was so moved by what he was experiencing that he took pride in relaying all of his discoveries with anyone who would listen.
