Watch and Listen: Steinway Junior Piano Competition 2019 Regional Winners, Live from WRTI

Listen to part two of our special live performances by regional winners of the second annual Steinway Junior Piano Competition. Our guests include: 14-year-old Jason Liu, 13-year-old Hannah Wang, and 16-year-old Angeline Ma performing works by Liszt, Prokofiev, and Ravel.

The second annual Steinway Junior Piano Competition took place in Steinway showrooms throughout the United States and Canada in the spring of 2019. Jacobs Music was honored to be the regional host of the competition in Philadelphia in April, which drew young pianists ages 18 and younger from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland.

Pianists Angeline Ma, Hannah Wang, and Jason Liu in the WRTI Performance Studio with Classical Host Kevin Gordon.

Jason Liu began studying piano at the age of 7. He won Second place at the 2019 Steinway Junior Piano Competition in Philadelphia in his division, as well as the 2018 and 2019 Grand Prix at Music Fest’s Rising Talents Festival, and top honors at NJMTA’s Spring Recitals. Jason has performed at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Rider University, Rowan University, and Rutgers University. In addition to solo piano, he also plays piano frequently for school ensembles. Jason’s teacher is Yevgeny Morozov.

Jason plays Liszt’s Transcendental Etude No. 10 in F Major.

Hannah Wang began playing piano at the age of five. She started training to be accepted by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music at the age of nine, and with only four months of preparation, she was admitted. Since beginning her short musical education, she has received many awards along the way. In 2017, she was awarded the silver medal at the 8th Concerto Competition with the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and performed with the orchestra. Hannah studies with Chin- Yun Hu.

Hannah performs Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 3 in A minor.

Angeline Ma started piano lessons at age 5 and is a 2019 YoungArts winner in Classical Music and a 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 Chopin Foundation of the United States Scholarship recipient. She has received prizes in various competitions and was featured on WRTI/NPR's radio program From the Top. Angeline won the Old York Road Symphony Concerto Competition and is a Junior at Conestoga High School.  In her free time, Angeline enjoys creative writing, website design, and baking. She studies piano with Susan Starr.

Angeline plays the Ondine from Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit.

A veteran broadcaster, Kevin garnered a wealth of experience in radio before taking the weekday classical host position from 2 to 6 PM at WRTI, where he was on the air until his retirement in March 2023.
