El Viaje, "The Journey" is the flight that takes off every Saturday night from 9 PM to midnight into “El Sonido Del Barrio “ ( the Sound/ Rhythm of the Latino neighborhood). Your host David Ortiz will have you flying first class with the explosive sounds of salsa, Latin Jazz , mambo and so much more. You’ll travel through the music to Puerto Rico, Cuba, Colombia, New York City and places you’d never expect salsa, Latin Jazz or mambo to be heard; places like Japan, France, Holland, and Africa. And of course you’ll be introduced to the local Philadelphia salsa, Latin Jazz and mambo artists who have made an impact in Latin Music not only in Philadelphia but worldwide as well.
El Viaje introduces you to the rich history of salsa, Latin Jazz and mambo. Through the music you’ll learn about the mambo wars of the 1950s, the “why” of the salsa worldwide explosion through Fania Records during the 1970s, and the eternal argument of who invented the mambo. It’s been rumored that the "cha cha cha" was invented when a Cuban musician heard a carpenter sand down a wooden floor with a rasping motion and the musician mimicked that sound with his shoes on the floor. Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Cintron, Papo Vasquez and of course the oldest salsa band in Latin music history….La Sonora Poncena are just some of the many great artists you’ll hear every Saturday night.
Welcome aboard El Viaje….enjoy the ride! “
