WRTI Receives Coveted Knight Foundation Arts Challenge Grant

Great news! We’ve been awarded a $50,000 challenge grant from the Knight Foundation to fund our new WRTI Music Makers series. WRTI is one of only 43 recipients to be chosen out of several thousand applicants.

The project will consist of recording and broadcasting 33 one-hour performances of our listening region’s world-class jazz and classical musicians whose talents reach only a fraction of their potential audience. We’ll also produce and broadcast short interview features in connection with the performances on WRTI’s Creatively Speaking, and add selected recordings from the series to our permanent music library.

The Knight Foundation's $2 million initiative awarded grants of $5,000 to $150,000 to support the best and most innovative ideas from local organizations and individuals seeking to transform the community in the Philadelphia region through the arts.

"We hope to provide a rewarding experience for both music makers and music lovers in our listening region through this project, which is in keeping with our mission," says WRTI's Jim Cotter.  The project will be completed by June 2015, and requires WRTI to raise matching funds for the grant.

The Knight Foundation invests in artistic excellence, funding arts projects that engage communities (in eight U.S. cities) in collective cultural experiences. They look for innovative projects that enrich and engage the communities that produce them. Here's a list of the winners.
