Luciano Pavarotti

Tune in on Opera Day, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m., to hear a classic 1968 recording of Donizetti's 'La fille du régiment,' featuring Dame Joan Sutherland and a young Luciano Pavarotti.

Luciano Pavarotti hailed from Modena, and the legendary tenor had a gift that belonged to the world. But he had a special bond with Philadelphia — and the city loved him back.

We're going back in time to 1986, and tenor Luciano Pavarotti was in town to sing Verdi's Requiem Mass at the Spectrum conducted by Lorin Maazel with a full orchestra and vocalists from the Opera Company of Philadelphia, now famously known as Opera Philadelphia. The entire concert was broadcast throughout the country on PBS.

Ron Howard's new Pavarotti film fails to make us feel much for its subject, and does little to bolster the magical, complicated art called opera.
