JAZZ: The 1959 Sound

This has been an important year for jazz anniversaries: Blue Note turned 70, Prestige turned 60 and, of course, Miles Davis' Kind of Blue turned 50. All of these accomplished innovators have one thing in common - they were turning out extremely influential jazz in the year 1959.

On Sunday, July 26th at 7 pm, WRTI presents a one-hour program highlighting some of the classic recordings from that magical year. Jazz: The '59 Sound takes a look at the different directions jazz stretched to in 1959, and the artists who were not afraid to release something new. Featured artists include Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck and Charles Mingus. You'll be amazed when you listen and realize the cultural importance of the year 1959.
