Emanual Ax at the New York Philharmonic: Nov. 4 at 3 pm on ENCORE!

Emanuel Ax
Emanuel Ax

Alan Gilbert conducts, and Emanuel Ax is soloist, for two very different concertos. Ax plays the Concerto in D minor of Johann Sebastian Bach.  Then you'll hear the semi-autobiographical piano concerto by Arnold Schoenberg, a work dating from 1942.

While Schoenberg didn't include subtitles in the four interconnected movements, his marking on the manuscript include "Life was so easy," "Suddenly hatred broke out," "A grave situation was created," and "But life goes on." Each matched with a suitable expression in the music, leading some authorities to conclude the descriptions matched events in his life.  Mozart's Linz Symphony concludes the broadcast.  Join us on Sunday, November 4th,  3 to 5 pm.
