Lyric Opera of Chicago Broadcasts On WRTI Begin With Verdi's SIMON BOCCANEGRA On May 18th

Get ready for a dynamic season of opera broadcasts from the world-renowned Lyric Opera of Chicago. The lineup includes La boheme, Elektra, Hansel & Gretel, Rigoletto, Oklahoma! and more. This Saturday, May 18th, it's Giuseppe Verdi's SIMON BOCCANEGRA from 1 to 4 pm featuring baritone Thomas Hamspon in the title role. Sir Andrew Davis conducts.

The intriguing plot unfolds in the incendiary atmosphere of 14th-century Genoa. The music, both hair-raisingly dramatic and sublimely beautiful, illuminates explosive, primary-color emotions—love, jealousy, rage, remorse. At the center is the noble, passionate, desperately conflicted Boccanegra, Doge of Genoa. You’ll be riveted by his violent conflict with his enemy, the nobleman Fiesco (and their reconciliation will break your heart). We know you'll agree with Lyric’s leading man, world-renowned Thomas Hampson, who considers Simon Boccanegra "truly one of the greatest operas ever written." Saturday, May 18th, 1 to 4 pm.
