Rossini's THE ITALIAN GIRL IN ALGIERS: Houston Grand Opera on WRTI, Nov. 2, 1 PM

Rossini: The Italian Girl in Algiers; Daniella Barcellona, Isabella; HGO Chorus "

From the moment she lands on the Algerian coast to rescue Lindoro, her true love, we know the resourceful Isabella is going to outsmart the conniving Mustafà, whose great hope is to find an Italian wife for himself.

Mezzo-Soprano Daniela Barcellona, making her HGO debut in the role of Isabella, is internationally renowned for her mastery of the bel canto repertoire. Her breakthrough performance ten years ago at the Rossini Opera Festival led to performances at all the major opera houses. The Italian Girl in Algiers is one of Rossini’s most popular operas, with a score marked by brilliant orchestration and witty melodies. Saturday, November 2, 1 pm.

L'italiana in Algeri (The Italian Girl in Algiers) is an operatic dramma giocoso in two acts by Gioachino Rossini to an Italian libretto by Angelo Anelli, based on his earlier text set by Luigi Mosca. It premiered at the Teatro San Benedetto in Venice on May 22, 1813. The music is characteristic of Rossini's style - remarkable for its fusion of sustained, manic energy with elegant, pristine melodies.
