Join us this Sunday at 1 pm as Austrian conductor Manfred Honeck, music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony, makes his eagerly anticipated Philadelphia Orchestra debut. The program features works by composers who were influenced by the music and spirit of Central European culture.
Viennese composer Johann Strauss Jr.’s Overture to Die Fledermaus, originally based on a French stage comedy, is a sprightly, waltzing curtain raiser, followed by Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5, grand in structure and style, and punctuated in the final movement by a Turkish-style dervish. It’s a virtuosic challenge for any musician; the eminent German violinist Christian Tetzlaff will be the soloist.
The program concludes with the much-loved Symphony No. 9, "From the New World," written during Czech composer Antonin Dvorak’s three-year stay in the U.S., and full of the many influences of American folk music, spirituals, and open landscapes. But it also contains a touch of nostalgia for his Czech homeland.
