Works by Lorin Maazel: The New York Philharmonic on WRTI, July 20, 3 to 5 PM

In the summer of 1943, Lorin Maazel could be found conducting the Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra (what is today the New York Philharmonic) at Lewisohn Stadium on the campus of City College of New York. Other conductors on the summer series included Fritz Reiner, Andre Kostelanetz, Morton Gould, and Antal Dorati. But, Maazel was only 13 years old.

Lorin Maazel led a concert with the New York Philharmonic as recently as January of 2013. From 2002-2009, he was the orchestra’s music director. From the time he began his conducting career, Lorin Maazel had led the New York Philharmonic over a period of 70 years.

Sunday, July 20th, from 3 to 5 pm on WRTI, The New York Philharmonic presents an encore presentation of works composed by the late conductor and former music director who died last Sunday at his farm in Castleton, Virginia.  The concert from which these pieces came was presented to celebrate Maestro Maazel’s 75th birthday in 2005. The broadcast is hosted by Kerry Frumkin.

Listen for this special presentation on Sunday afternoon at a special time, 3 to 5 pm, on WRTI and the All-Classical Stream at wrti.org.
