John Blake, Jr. Remembered (1947-2014)

We have very sad news to share. Jazz violinist, improviser, composer, and educator extraordinaire John Blake, Jr. passed away today at age 67. In addition to being a sweetheart of a man, John had a fascinating career that led him to perform with Grover Washington, Jr., McCoy Tyner, Dr. Billy Taylor, Regina Carter, and the list goes on. He also gave so much of himself to thousands of students across the Philadelphia region, instilling in them his love of music and the jazz tradition. RIP, Mr. Blake.

NPR Music published a wonderful memorial post about John. You can read it here.

A Life Celebration Service honoring John will take place on Monday, August 25 at 11 am at Sharon Baptist Church, 3955 Conshohocken Avenue, Philadelphia. Viewing is from 9 to 11 am. There will also be a viewing on Sunday, August 24 from 1 to 3:30 pm at Batchelor Brothers Funeral Home, 7112 North Broad Street in Philadelphia.
