Military Band Music on Memorial Day! May 25, 6 AM to 6 PM

The U.S. Navy Band marching on Pennsylvania Avenue.

The military band tradition in the U.S. dates back to the 18th century. The number of bands, type of instruments, styles of music, and audiences reached have grown immensely since those early drum-and-bugle days.

This Memorial Day, from 6 am to 6 pm, WRTI presents the music of today's military bands, including the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, and Navy. These bands each have a wide variety of configurations that provide the country with music ranging from classical to jazz to country. And let's not forget marches!

You'll also hear works performed by some of the country's great civilian bands, including the Allentown Band, the Temple University Wind Symphony, the Eastman Wind Ensemble, and the Dallas Wind Symphony. Highlights include military hymns and service songs, and music by composers written for band - Morton Gould's West Point Symphony, Vincent Persechetti's Psalm for Band, Vittorio Giannini's Symphony No. 3 for Winds, Holst's Suite No. 1 for Military Band, and more.

Some of the finest musicians of our time received their training in a military band. Today's military bands continue the tradition of training great musicians while serving the country with outstanding music - and WRTI is proud to share their excellence with you on Memorial Day - Monday, May 25, 6 am to 6 pm.
