The Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert on WRTI: Gianandrea Noseda Conducts Beethoven, Jan. 22, 1 PM

Gianandrea Noseda

This Sunday, January 22nd, at 1 pm, newly appointed music director of the National Symphony, Gianandrea Noseda conducts The Philadelphia Orchestra in a program that whirls from dance to jazz to Beethoven.
The Milanese maestro has been sharing his love of under-appreciated Italian repertoire with Philadelphia audiences for the past two seasons, with the music of Alfredo Casella especially memorable from last year On this Sunday’s Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert broadcast he brings the music of Goffredo Petrassi, whose 1932 Partita updates the traditional  dance forms of the galliard, chaconne, and gigue. Noseda says he loves to conduct it with “fantastic orchestras,” so, one would think, he’s bringing it to Philadelphia with a purpose!

Pianist Alexander Toradze talks backstage with WRTI's Susan Lewis.

Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major was written around the same time as the Partita, but is heavily influenced by jazz, and the masterful Georgian pianist Alexander Toradze will be the soloist.

Concluding the program, Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony, the “Pastoral,” certainly a mainstay of the repertoire, but Noseda says every time he conducts it, the work “opens new windows on the idea of the symphony.”

During intermission, WRTI’s Susan Lewis interviews pianist Alexander Toradze, and Debra Lew Harder speaks with Maestro Noseda. Not to be missed, that’s Sunday, January 22nd, 1 to 3 pm on WRTI.
