The Philadelphia Youth Orchestra on WRTI: Barber, Sibelius, and Rimsky-Korsakov, Jan. 29 at 4 PM

Ryan Donnell
Violinist David Kim

We open our broadcast season of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra with a program the ensemble performed last November in Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center.

This season marks Louis Scaglione's 20th as Music Director and Conductor of the PYO, and the program featured an appearance by David Kim, concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra, as soloist. The program opens with Samuel Barber's youthful overture to The School for Scandal, a work Barber composed while still a student at the Curtis Institute of Music. David Kim plays the Sibelius Violin Concerto, a work that Kim had never played before in Verizon Hall.

Then, a performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's virtuoso orchestral suite Scheherazade.  Maestro Scaglione says this is a great work for the orchestra, as it provides a solo spotlight for many of the the orchestra's principal players, not the least of which is concertmaster Jason Vassiliou, who weaves Scheherazade's tales to the sultan through the intricate solos he plays in the performance.  Listen on Sunday, January 29th at 4 pm on WRTI 90.1 FM or online at WRTI.org. WRTI's Jack Moore is your host.
