Jazz Night In America on WRTI 90.1: Newport Jazz Festival Special, The Modern All-Stars

Listen to the final episode of Jazz Night In America's three-part series on the Newport Jazz Festival. Philly native Christian McBride, who hosts the program and is also the artistic director of the festival, is part of some of the amazing vintage Newport performances featured this time around.

Just because it's "modern" doesn't mean it's unknown, as the Herbie Hancock Trio's 1988 acountic set appears on this installment. We'll also visit 2001 to listen to the late, great Roy Hargrove, and hear from supergroup The Jazz Futures (with McBride, and another famous Philadelphian). This journey through Newport festivals past will come as close as 2018, when Cecile McLorin Salvant sang in front the all-female powerhouse group, Artemis.

Set List:

  • "Undecided" (Newport House Band)
  •  "Just One Of Those Things" (Herbie Hancock Trio)
  •   "Captain Hook" (Jazz Futures)
