Join us on Sunday, September 20th at 1 PM on WRTI 90.1 and Monday, September 21st at 7 PM on WRTI HD-2 to hear a Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert broadcast from 2017 featuring works by Mozart and Brahms. Herbert Blomstedt, who turned 90 during that season, conducts and celebrates what was the 30th anniversary of his Philadelphia Orchestra debut. Pianist Garrick Ohlsson is soloist.
Maestro Blomstedt conducts Brahms’s lush Symphony No. 3, a cornerstone of the symphonic repertoire.
The concert begins with one of Mozart’s great piano concertos, composed in Vienna in the 1780’s when he began giving subscription concerts to support himself and his growing family. He wrote a dozen within the space of two years, and No. 25 in C major is the last of them, and one of his greatest works.
The soloist, a familiar presence onstage with The Philadelphia Orchestra, is the extraordinary Garrick Ohlsson, who first appeared with the Philadelphians in 1970, the year he won the Gold Medal at the Chopin International Piano Competition.
During intermission, WRTI’s Debra Lew Harder speaks backstage with Garrick Ohlsson, and Susan Lewis interviews Herbert Blomstedt on the occasion of his 30th anniversary conducting The Philadelphia Orchestra.
