It's Jazz Appreciation Month on WRTI

Mary Swingle

For Jazz Appreciation Month, WRTI will be celebrating Philadelphia jazz artists, their mentors, and the organizations that continue to cultivate jazz musicians.

Tune in every weeknight at 7:15 PM and 10:15 PM, Saturday at 7:15 PM and Sunday at 12:15 PM and 10:15 PM to hear your favorite artists talk about the forces in their lives that helped them along the way.

Your jazz hosts will bring you some music from the local artists as well. You’ll hear from the likes of Gerald Veasley, Bobby Zankel, Monnette Sudler and many others.

Friday, April 22nd marks 100 years of the great double bassist Charles Mingus. Tune in throughout the weekend to hear plenty of the music of Mingus to celebrate. Whether it’s the man himself, the Mingus Big Band, or other artists' interpretations of his compositions, we will be having a ball celebrating Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus!

In November 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30th as International Jazz Day in order to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe.

WRTI will be unveiling a very special NPR Live Sessions Playlist to join in the celebration. Stay tuned for more details.
