Tune in on Saturday, May 9 at 1 p.m. for The Metropolitan Opera’s broadcast of Gaetano Donizetti’s opera comique, La Fille du Régiment, originally performed in 2025 and conducted by Giacomo Sagripanti. WRTI will broadcast this encore production from the Metropolitan Opera House, as part of the Met’s Saturday matinee series.

La Fille du Régiment is Donizetti’s first opera set to a French libretto, written by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Jean-François Bayard. The opera takes place during the Tyrolean rebellion in the early 19th century. Marie, rescued from the battlefield as an infant by French soldiers, has become a beloved canteen girl in their regiment. She falls in love with Tonio, a Tyrolean, who joins the regiment to earn her love.

This production features soprano Erin Morley in the virtuosic title role of Marie and tenor Lawrence Brownlee as her beloved Tyrolean, Tonio. Mezzo-soprano Susan Graham is the Marquise of Berkenfield and Peter Kálmán is Sergeant Sulpice, a soldier of the French regiment. Additionally, acclaimed actress Sandra Oh makes a cameo appearance in a speaking role as the Duchess of Krakenthorp.
