Tune in on Saturday, May 23 at 1 p.m. to hear the Metropolitan Opera’s broadcast of Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot. WRTI will broadcast this production from the Metropolitan Opera House, as part of the Met’s Saturday matinee series.
Left unfinished at the time of Puccini’s death but later completed by Franco Alfano, Turandot is a three act opera set in Imperial China. It follows the story of Turandot, a beautiful princess who will marry any suitor who can correctly guess her three riddles. If the suitor fails, they will be executed. Despite several warnings by three imperial ministers, the young Prince Calàf falls in love with the princess and attempts her challenge.
This production, conducted by Oksana Lyniv, will feature Italian soprano Anna Pirozzi as titular Princess Turandot and tenor Brian Jagde as the enamored Prince of Calàf. Soprano Angel Blue is Liù, a slave girl who secretly loves the Prince, and Bass-baritone John Relyea is Timur, the Prince’s long-lost father. Tenor Carlo Bosi will be the Emperor Altoum.
