Violinist Jenny Scheinman shines in The Late Set Radio Hour

Tune in this Sunday, May 31 at 8 p.m. ET on 90.1 FM, and streaming at wrti.org, to hear the new episode of The Late Set Radio Hour, featuring violinist and composer Jenny Scheinman.

Scheinman takes us into a musical world shaped by folk traditions, improvisation, groove, and the wild landscapes of Northern California. Across more than two decades, she has built a singular voice that moves fluidly between jazz, Americana, and experimental music — collaborating with artists like Bill Frisell, Jason Moran, and Allison Miller while forging a deeply personal sound of her own.

The program centers around music from Scheinman’s acclaimed 2024 album All Species Parade, inspired by her upbringing in the remote Mattole Valley on California’s northern coast. In conversation with WRTI’s Josh Jackson taped live at Solar Myth before a concert presented by Ars Nova Workshop, Scheinman reflects on nature, isolation, horses, surf music, and the unlikely musical intersections that shaped her career.

Along the way, we hear recordings spanning nearly twenty years of collaboration and creative evolution — from expansive chamber-jazz works to loose-limbed grooves filled with warmth, humor, and restless curiosity.
