Tune in on Saturday, August 1 at 1 p.m. to hear Gaetano Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love, a beloved two-act comic opera that is considered to be a core piece of the operatic canon. WRTI will carry Gran Teatre del Liceu’s 2025 production as a part of the WFMT Opera Series.
The Elixir of Love is based on Le philtre, a libretto written by Eugène Scribe. The opera centers on Nemorino, a young man who is unrequitedly in love with Adina, a beautiful landowner. When the traveling pharmacist Dr. Dulcamara arrives in town, Nemorino purchases a love potion from him, hoping to attract the affections of the indifferent Adina.
This production features soprano Pretty Yende as the young farm owner, Adina, and tenor Michael Spyres as the infatuated Nemorino. Baritone Jan Antem is the Sergeant Belcore, baritone Fabio Capitanucci is Dr. Dulcamara, and soprano Núria Vilà is Giannetta. Diego Matheuz conducts the Gran Teatre del Liceu Orchestra & Chorus.
