Tune into WRTI on Saturday, Aug. 8 at 1 p.m. to hear Pelléas et Mélisande, Claude Debussy’s only completed opera. At its premier, Pelléas et Mélisande’s innovative sound and dreamlike presentation left audiences heavily divided. Critics found it unimpressive, even objectionable, while younger composers and listeners found it to be gripping. WRTI will carry Teatro alla Scala’s 2026 production of this subversive opera as a part of the WFMT Opera Series.
In Pelléas et Mélisande, Golaud, widower and prince, is hunting in a forest when he encounters Mélisande, a mysterious girl who is unable to remember her identity or origin. Golaud marries her and brings her home, although it isn’t long before Mélisande begins an affair with Pelléas, Golaud’s half-brother. Golaud attempts to uncover Pelléas and Mélisande’s clandestine relationship.
This production features tenor Bernard Richter as Pelléas and soprano Sara Blanch as the mysterious Mélisande. Baritone Simon Keenlyside is Mélisande’s husband, Golaud; contralto Marie-Nicole Mexieux is Golaud's mother, Geneviève; and bass John Relyea is King Arkel of Allemonde. Maxime Pascal conducts La Scala Orchestra & Chorus.
